Minutes of the May Monthly Meeting of Ennis Town Council held at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, 13th May 2008 in the Council Chamber, Waterpark House, Drumbiggle, Ennis, Co. Clare

The Register of Orders by the Director of Service, Town Clerk and Town Engineer and the Planning Register were on the meeting table

At the outset of the Meeting, Mayor T. Brennan advised the Meeting that:

The Senior Citizens Celebration will be held on Thursday, 22nd May 2008 at 8.00 p.m. in the Buttermarket Building,
The Mayors of Clare and the four Clare T.D.s will be meeting with the Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney, T.D. on Thursday, 13th May 2008 at 3.00 p.m. to discuss the development of Ennis Hospital.

Cllr. T. Brennan then proposed a vote of sympathy to the Family of the Late Roibeard O’Ceallaigh, Former Town Manager and Assistant County Manager with Clare County Council.  He proposed that there should be a full adjournment of the Meeting as a mark of respect to Mr. O’Ceallaigh.  He stated that Roibeard had a great way about him and great ability to get things done.  He had done fantastic work for Ennis as Town Manager and also through his involvement with Conradh na Gaeilge and Feile na hInse.   He extended his sympathy to Roibeard’s wife Carmel, his three sons and his extended family.

Cllr. P. Considine stated that Mr. O’Ceallaigh was a very honourable man and that he was the best public official he had ever worked with.  He stated that he was a very active man who did great work for Ennis.  He was responsible for the Ennis 750 Celebrations which was the catalyst for a lot of the prosperity in Ennis. 

Cllr. J. Reidy stated that Roibeard was a great gentleman who would be a huge loss to the town and the County.   Cllr. M. Coote Ryan stated that she was shocked and saddened by Roibeard’s death and that the prosperity in Ennis was a testament to his great work.  Cllr. T. Glynn stated that he was a great worker and will be sorely missed in Ennis.  Cllr. J. Flynn spoke of Roibeard’s dynamic energy and stated that he always expected the best from public servants.  Cllr. F. Neylon stated that he had only heard great things about Roibeard and that he had made a wonderful contribution to the town. 

T. Coughlan, Town Manager stated that Roibeard had made a great contribution to Ennis and local government in general.  He was the driving force behind many projects, including the County Museum.  Dynamic and Driven were the two words that summed up Roibeard most.   E. Power, Town Clerk stated that he had worked with Bob and that he identified with the sentiments expressed by each of the speakers.  He made a major contribution to Ennis, Clare and Limerick.   T. Tiernan, Town Engineer extended his sympathy to Roibeard’s family and remarked on his enthusiasm for all projects and works that he was involved with.

A minutes silence ensued.

It was agreed that the adjourned meeting would be held on Wednesday, 21st May 2008 at 3:30 p.m.

The meeting then concluded.
