Minutes of the Special Meeting of Ennis Town Council held at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, 18th April 2008 in the Council Chamber, Waterpark House, Drumbiggle, Ennis, Co. Clare.

Mayor T. Brennan outlined that the reason for calling the Special Meeting of Ennis Town Council was to pay respects to the late Dr. Patrick Hillery, former President of Ireland, who served the people of Clare very admirably.  He asked that the sympathy of the Council be extended to his wife Maeve, his son John and his extended family.

Cllr. P. Considine complimented Mayor T. Brennan for calling the Special Meeting He stated that Dr. Hillery was a very talented man who had made a major contribution to Ireland without receiving the accolades that he should have.  He stated that the people of Clare should be very proud of this great man.

Cllr. J. Reidy commended Mayor T. Brennan for calling the meeting.  He stated that Dr. Hillery was one of a kind and had many achievements and was held in high regard within the community and the people of Clare. 

Cllr. M. Coote Ryan stated that Clare can be very proud of Dr. Hillery.  He was very approachable and had carried his bedside manner easily into politics.

Cllr. T. Glynn commended T. Brennan for calling the Special Meeting.  He stated that Dr. Hillery was a Clare man to be proud of.  He stated that he was humble and honest and that he was a brilliant politician in education and commerce.  He stated that he was unanimously selected as President and had cross party support. 

Cllr. F. Neylon stated that Patrick Hillery was a proud Clare man.  He made people proud to be from Clare.  All parties supported him as President.  As a Doctor, he was available day and night. 

E. Power, Town Clerk stated that Patrick Hillery was part of the government that had laid the foundations for change in Ireland.  He held the office of President with distinction and that it was a great honour for himself and the people of Clare to have him as President.  He had maintained his links with the County while President and always kept in touch with the people of Clare.  He was a true Clare man and was loved by the people of Clare.

The meeting then concluded.
